The summer sun paints southern Colorado with a vibrant glow, making it a photographer's paradise. But that same sunshine can pose a challenge for senior and family portraits. The combination of scorching temperatures and grumpy, sweaty subjects isn't exactly a recipe for picture-perfect moments. Not too mention it can make things really hard with young children and elderly folk.
Fear not, friends! Here in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and the surrounding areas, we know a thing or two about battling the heat. With a little planning and these clever tips, you can capture stunning senior and family portraits that radiate summer joy, not summer melt-down. Though, a melt down photoshoot may bring laughs in years to come...
Location, Location, Location!
- Embrace the Golden Hour: Colorado boasts some of the most breathtaking sunsets in the country. Schedule your portrait session for the golden hour, that magical time just after sunrise or before sunset. The softer light is not only flattering, but it avoids the harsh midday sun that casts unflattering shadows. Temperatures at this time of day can be the hottest, but with the sun pushing through so much atmosphere at an angle, sunburns are less likely!
- Seek Shady Sanctuary: Southern Colorado offers a wealth of naturally shaded locations. Think: forests with towering pines, parks with sprawling meadows, or charming, historic downtowns with tree-lined streets. These shady havens provide much-needed relief from the heat and create a cooler, more comfortable environment for everyone.
- Water, Glorious Water: Locations with access to water features like creeks, streams, or fountains can be a lifesaver (literally!). Not only do they add a visually pleasing element to your photos, but dipping toes or splashing a bit of cool water on faces can work wonders for keeping spirits high. Watch out for Giardia though, we recommend bringing fresh water for drinking. Remember! 3 Liters a day!
Dress for Success (and Comfort!)
- Light and Breezy Fabrics: Encourage your senior or family to wear light, breathable clothing in natural fibers like cotton or linen. Opt for loose-fitting styles that allow for air circulation and avoid dark colors that absorb heat.
- Accessorize Wisely: Hats with wide brims offer shade for both faces and eyes. Portable fans are lifesavers for a quick cool-down and can even add a touch of whimsy to photos.
Hydration is Key!
- Bring the H2O: This one's a no-brainer. Advise your clients to stay hydrated throughout the session. Bring plenty of water for everyone involved and encourage frequent breaks to sip and cool down.
Plan Like a Pro
- Communication is Key: Talk to your clients beforehand about the challenges of hot weather photography. Set realistic expectations and let them know what you'll be doing to keep everyone comfortable.
- Prepare a "Beat the Heat" Kit: Pack a small cooler with water and chilled face towels. Bug spray and sunscreen are a must, and a portable canopy can provide a quick refuge from the sun if needed.
Capture Candid Moments:
Sometimes, the most genuine smiles come when people are relaxed and having fun. Embrace the playful energy that often emerges during a hot-weather shoot. Capture candid moments of laughter, water fights, or simply enjoying the scenery.
By following these tips, you can transform a potentially sweaty situation into a positive and productive photoshoot. So grab your camera, embrace the sunshine, and capture those southern Colorado memories that will last a lifetime!
